Thanks all. Seem to have got it sorted. Transpired the code I needed was the full 16 digits appearing on the maxidot. It was a superb related post on here which gave me the clue to use all the numbers, not just one of the groupings. That appears to have done the trick and the car now recognises the phone and has the phone book installed.
Remove the interior light by removing the lense with a trim tool and remove the two Phillips screws (one either side of the main light bulb). Remove the foam insert and insert the microphone (should not be connected to the loom at this point). The mic is keyed. Insert the green connector until the barb secures it.
