It has low maintenance tubeless tires (unlike the new Africa Twin) and the engine has plenty of grunt (more than the 1200GS) and it comes with a 7.9Gallon fuel tank (vs the Super Tenere's 6.6 gallons). The only problem is that the seat height at the lowest setting is 33.8 inches and I have a 30 inch inseam.
4 out of 5 (4/5) It's not a great story when you start delving into the reliability of the KTM
They advised me to make a warranty repair claim for two new tyres, plus new rim seal bands plus grommets for the TPMS sensors. If other owners encounter the same problem, the part numbers you will need are as follows: Rear wheel spoke seal bands: 60310173200 FELGENBAND 17". 60310277100 DICHTGUMMI 5"X17". 692. Location: Brooklyn, NY. I ride a Super Duke GT, but I imagine the rear brakes are pretty similar to all 1290s. It is a very common issue on the 1.0 and 2.0, stress fractures at the mounts cause leaks. Simple to change it but the part is ~$500 if out of warranty. Make sure you keep your battery terminals tight, they can work their way loose and give MTC failure and other odd-ball errors. Lots of tips and such on the FB group "Club KTM 1290 Super Duke R".
1290 problems? : r/KTM. I'm doing a bit of research into my next bike. Currently have a VFR1200F but would like something a bit lighter and with more tech (cornering ABS definitely). Can someone give me an overview of what to look out for on these/the major issues? My main concern is reliability and how it does with year round riding re corrosion.
So far I've replaced the rear disc as the bobbins wore out, and that's about it. On my third set of chain and sprockets, lost count of pads and tyres. I put an Oberon slave on. I'd had no problems with the original but replaced it as a precaution before a 4000 mile trip to Scotland.
